Physics of dance
Kenneth Laws is a professor of physics who became interested in classical ballet to a degree that led him to study it, teach it and eventually research it in physical terms. He has done much work in bringing these unrelated fields together. He has written three books on the physics of dance, and given talks and presentations to those involved in physics as well as dance. He is currently engaged in research on jumps, using quantitative measurements to determine the forces exerted on and transmitted through the body, which bring it to rest on landing from a vertical jump. A talk with Professor Laws provides remarkable insight into the world of ballet from the point of view of one who has made an unusual mesh between these ostensibly unrelated fields.

Benefits of Ballroom Dancing
The latest dancing reality shows and Hollywood flicks have helped ballroom dancing’s popularity skyrocket and have helped some folks get back in the swing of things.
From the movie screen to the small screen, ballroom dancing is hot.

Low impact, fast ballroom dancing burns 387 calories an hour.
Slow ballroom dancing, 211 calories, which is just as many as playing tennis, swimming or walking.
Experts say ballroom dancing can also decrease your blood pressure, improve your body’s ability to metabolize sugar, reduce stress and lower cholesterol.

Dancers take their hobby to heart (health benefits of dancing)
Padilla, 58, has been swing dancing for 18 years.

"It's the best form of exercise I know, and it's fun," he said.

A recent study by Italian researchers found that 21 minutes of dancing three times a week is just as beneficial a workout for a healthy heart as exercising on a bicycle or treadmill. This didn't surprise a group of local swing dancers and their teacher.

"Dancing is considered an aerobic exercise," he said. "It benefits cardiac rehab patients' hearts. The continuous motion, the consistent movement of the arms and legs, may provide the same benefits of working out on a treadmill and burning up to 250 to 400 calories an hour."

"Instead of jumping up and down, which is not good for people over 60 years old, one can dance and get the heart pounding," she explained. "Running can cause knee problems. The pounding is not good. By dancing, you can get your heart rate well above 140."

"We not only get a physical boost, but also an emotional boost. The endorphins get going and we feel good emotionally and physically," she said.

"It's fun and social," she said. "You meet lovely people. You're not isolated or at home sitting in front of the tube. If you're having fun, you look forward to it. A lot of people don't look forward to a treadmill."
