Who's
Your Dentist!!?? |
 As
some of you may know, I recently had
to have one of my Wisdom teeth
extracted. What is frequently
a very unpleasant and uncomfortable
experience, was totally painless and
very simple.
My
dentist was one of our own CT dance
community, Pilar Gochoco.
Although Pilar does general
dentistry, her passion is cosmetic
dentistry. I asked Pilar
to tell me a little bit about
herself - how she got into dancing
and dentistry. Here's what she
had to say:
 I
was a "dancer" before I got into
dentistry! Yup, from childhood
'till 4th year high school, I
was a ballet dancer, loved
ballet, loved toes shoes,
despite my toes bleeding (I
never wore pads) if I danced for
a long time, still loved it. But
after high school, I was forced
to make a decision, quit ballet
for dentistry. Dental school was
too demanding, I just didn't
have time for anything else but
school work. I kid you not, that
was tough. I loved ballet so
much, having to quit was sort of
depressing, in fact, I cried the
first few times I watched any
ballet. But had to do it.
So fast forward few years later,
now I'm a dentist......
All of a sudden, I had an
opportunity to take ballroom
dance classes, I enjoyed it for
a while, until a friend
mentioned about Diane Nardone
and hustle, got into hustle,
then loved it much more than
ballroom. In a nutshell, it may
have took about 25 years for me
to go back to dancing, perhaps
not ballet (too late for toe
shoes) nevertheless, hustle,
like ballet, for me, has a lot
of "interpretation" or "freedom
of expression". I never thought
I'd have another chance to
experience the pleasure of
dancing after dental school,
fortunately I did and do.
I consider myself lucky to be
able to do both (dentistry and
dance), I derive a lot of
pleasure too doing dentistry,
changing peoples smiles, making
people look better, saving them
from pain, etc., So that's my
little story.

Teaching kids through dance isn't
mad |
|
The
relevance of the program may seem a
stretch to some. But given the
well-documented incidents of
violence, truancy and inappropriate
sexual behavior at Milwaukee public
high schools recently, a program
whose goals are to instill
discipline and respect for the
opposite sex and to encourage kids
to stay in school - all at the
impressionable ages of 10 to 13 - is
worthy of closer scrutiny.
Yes,
it often takes generations to turn
around cultural norms about what is
appropriate behavior. But as
"Dancing with the Stars" has
demonstrated, if former pro football
players can be cool as ballroom
dancers, perhaps there could be an
alternative future for would-be high
school troublemakers.
