Randi Cohen - Dancing her way to
becoming a Psychotherapist |
I
recently performed with Randi during
the demonstration at the Connecticut
Ballet in Stamford, CT (on Feb 5,
2007). She is an excellent
dancer who has worked very hard over
the years to rise to the advanced
ranks of West Coast Swing. I
am proud to call her a friend and to
be able to dance with her as an
ambassador of West Coast Swing.
You can find her on Monday nights at
the Black Bear Saloon, but you'll
have to stay late 10:45pm to see her
arrival.
Here's a
piece of Randi's own story in her
own words:
I
grew up in a little house out in
Queens, NY, with my nose buried in a
book since nursery school. In
second grade, I decided to go to
Princeton University and become a
rocket scientist. Nobody tried very
hard to talk me out of it, so that
is pretty much what I did. While at
Princeton, I saw the movie Strictly
Ballroom and have been hooked on
dancing ever since.
I moved to Santa Cruz, CA to earn
my PhD in astrophysics, and the
first summer I was there, I saw my
first West Coast Swing dance. I sat
and watched for hours (I hardly ever
have that kind of attention span for
watching other people do things). I
mentally noted every good dancer in
the room and thought, "One day, he's
going to want to dance with me."
That was a lofty goal, since at the
time I didn't even know what a slot
was. I knew I'd achieved it when,
years later, I was at that same
dance and my old instructor said he
hadn't asked me to dance all night
because "I'm intimidated - you're
too good." Of course I told him
that was nonsense, but I was
touched. I went on to compete on
the national circuit in the advanced
category, to choreograph and to
teach, but somehow that compliment
from him was my greatest milestone.
In a way, dancing has made me who
I am today. I realized through
dance how much I love being with all
kinds of people, so I finally talked
myself out of the astrophysics and
came back to NYC to study medicine.
Currently I am doing my residency
training at Yale University in
psychiatry, and am planning on
becoming a psychotherapist (meaning,
to talk to people about their
problems and help them become who
they want to be, or maybe to want to
be who they are). Residency keeps
me pretty busy, but I really enjoy
the times when I do get to dance,
and to share my joy in dancing with
others through teaching and
performance.
Cheers,
Randi

Ballroom dancing can improve fitness, relationships |
|
A lovely way to
improve both your health and your relationship with your
significant other is ballroom dancing, thinks psychologist
Nancy Mramor.
"Because ballroom dancing is a great form of aerobic
exercise, it offers a wealth of health benefits that can
help prevent disease and manage a variety of chronic health
conditions," said Ms. Mramor, the on-air psychologist for
KDKA TV/radio.
"The biggest thing [about ballroom dancing] is you meet
the nicest people from all walks of life," said Frank,
echoing a sentiment expressed by nearly all the dancers at
the studio the night the Post-Gazette visited.

Free
dance classes given by nonprofit |

The organization focuses on schools that are
in low-income neighborhoods or where students are struggling
academically, although the directors eventually want to
cha-cha and swing their way into schools with a variety of
backgrounds.
“Many of the students involved are performing below grade
level and some have learning difficulties,” she said. “We
try to offer a positive environment, even when they
misbehave and aren't focused.
Besides building confidence, dance helps students build
respect for themselves and others, and improves health,
coordination, flexibility and discipline. It also gives
children a better appreciation of music and art, Lumbert
said.
“I wish this program would have been around when I was a
child,” Meneses said. “These kids need attention. They need
this type of talent. When they do something and feel great,
their self-esteem goes 'Wow.' ”

Into
the swing of things |
| Erik: I
know the teachers of this program very well and they can be
seen at many of the national events in this region.
When put into pairs for their first partner dance, Putnam
Elementary students tried every trick in the book to avoid
actually holding hands with the opposite sex.
“We learn that that’s the No. 1 thing—respect, respect,
respect,” said fifth-grader Cassie Shankland, 10. “When we
started all the boys were afraid to touch the girls and all
the girls were afraid to touch the boys but once you get
used to it, you don’t care. You’re thinking about the
steps.”
“To partner dance at this age is really important,” said
Marty Klempner, a competitive swing dancer teaching the
students along with Valerie Salstrom. “You can learn a lot
by dancing.”
Experts say a dance curriculum not only gets children moving
but also gives them important social lessons and teaches
them how to interact with others.

How
to Choose a Man to Marry |
There are no guarantees when a man and a woman say
"I do." But the chances you will stay happily
married for a lifetime skyrocket if a woman only
marries if she finds four special qualities in a man
-- and refuses to do so if she doesn't.
It's all about self-awareness and the power of
choice, insists Spina. A woman must first make a
commitment to herself before she makes a commitment
to a long-term relationship. The payoff is huge. A
recent Women's Day survey showed that only 44
percent of the 3,000 married women who were surveyed
said they would marry their husbands if given the
chance to do it all again.
The four things women absolutely need to find in a
husband so they can live happily ever after:
1. Choose a man who complements you socially. Are
you a couch potato or a social butterfly? It doesn't
take a rocket scientist to figure out that couch
potatoes are more compatible with other couch
potatoes.
2. Choose a man who is on the same page as you when
it comes to sexual likes and dislikes. No
explanation needed
3. Choose a man who complements you financially.
Talk about money before you walk down the aisle.
4. Choose to marry a man who matches you
spiritually. Again, keep it simple. If you are
religious, marry someone who shares your faith.

| All
the
things we enjoy on Valentine's Day are good for us |
|
Yep, these romantic indulgences hit us in the same spot
every year -- the heart (and for the giver, the wallet).
But there's more than just the emotional benefit of
spreading love on Valentine's Day. It's also good for our
health.
It's good for us to go dancing, to savor a glass of wine,
to enjoy the restorative benefits of a massage or sex.
Medical research backs it up.
Keeping that in mind, we offer the following healthy
arguments for some of the most popular Valentine's Day
gifts.
