Pitchers Rethink Routines |

Sounds like
baseball pitchers are using a form of dance to get in touch
with their bodies and their game.
Jaeger's regimen lasts five hours a day, and for the
first four hours, no one touches a baseball. The pitchers
meditate, stretch, listen to music, perform yoga poses,
meditate again and listen to more music. They talk about
dreams and visualize games.
"The first morning, you ask yourself, How does this have
anything to do with baseball? " said Jeremy Plexico, a minor
league pitcher for the
Washington Nationals. "Then you get on the mound and you
feel totally different, totally balanced."
Meditation and yoga are not new to professional sports.
But baseball players are famously old-fashioned, still
warming up with a game of pepper and a cheek of tobacco.
Breathing exercises and downward-facing dogs tend to prompt
eye rolls in the dugout.

It's difficult to find a good relationship AND a good
dance partnership. Although this article has
nothing to do with dancing, the problem is exactly the
same in many dance/relationships.If there were a clinical diagnosis for her problem,
it might be called beta cook disorder. Even though Ms.
Edwards blithely prepared flank steak for dinner parties
when she was in college, she is now married to someone
who takes charge in the kitchen: an alpha cook.
“I am like that,” Mr. Goldman agreed. “I wouldn’t
blame Robin if she didn’t want to cook with me. I’ve
caught myself. It’s not so much me telling her she’s
doing something wrong. I think it’s just that she
catches my glances.”
It was a nice fantasy while it lasted: rather than
letting the lady of the house bear the constant burden
of cooking dinner, the modern couple would share the
work. Husbands would take an interest in casseroles.
Wives would slap slabs of meat on the grill. They would
read cookbooks and watch the Food Network together. The
kitchen would be a peaceful domain equally ruled by two
people.
For many couples, this never happened. Instead,
wedged there in the kitchen together, they fell into a
power dynamic just as unequal and emotionally fraught as
the arrangement that puts the female half in a frilly
apron. Instead of a partnership, some couples say that
their relationship in the kitchen more closely resembles
a tiny dictatorship.

This is the same
reasoning for why I have my beginner videos online for free.
It's important to be able to review, it's great advertising,
and it never substitutes for actually learning in person.
Following the lead of the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology and other highly competitive
schools, more institutions are posting online everything
from lecture notes to sample tests, and even making audio
and video files of actual lectures publicly available. The
sites attract anywhere from thousands to more than one
million unique visitors each month.
Universities say they don't worry about losing applicants by
giving away materials online. "From Yale's point of view,
there still is nothing more important than direct
interaction between students and teachers," says
Diana E.E. Kleiner, an art-history professor and director of
the Yale project. "Putting a selection of our courses online
doesn't change that."

NYC court upholds law that bans patrons from dancing in
bars, restaurants |

The Gotham
WCS Club put it's best foot forward in the love of dance.
This ruling says something about our culture.
Come and meet those dancing
feet, up on 42nd Street - but only in nightspots with
special licences.
The city's 80-year-old
cabaret law banning dancing by patrons in ordinary bars and
restaurants is legal, the state Supreme Court's Appellate
Division ruled Thursday.
The Gotham West Coast
Swing Club and several people had sued, saying the law
violated their constitutional right to free expression.
