April 13, 2007 - This review of the
Monday West Coast Swing Night (April
9) at the Black Bear Saloon recently
appeared in Avenue B's Newsletter:
Jane,
Sean and Kate showed up for Western
Swing class offered by a company
called Swing Shoes last Monday night
at Black Bear in South Norwalk--we
were a small but mighty Avenue B
contingent. We were impressed with
the number of people who turned
up for these classes --about 12 men
and 12 women and the equal number
for the Intermediate class which
followed. We were not that impressed
however with the style of
instruction, which felt like part
drill sergeant, part Simon from
American Idol. We were also fatigued
by the constant partner changes
required while learning the basic
steps, which brought back memories
of those unfortunate party games of
our youth where someone winds up
with no chair to sit in --not a
nightmare exactly but also not that
fun. Ok, so we're still looking for
that perfect dancing class
experience.

Although this review was meant to
express disappointment with West
Coast Swing night, it is
almost one of the best reviews I
could have asked for. It
clearly indicates the good turn out
& professional quality of dance
instruction. Unfortunately, it
does not give a full review of the
entire social experience. The

Ice Dance Champions Campaign for Hip-Hop Music in
Competition |

Hip-Hop may be one of the hottest genres in, but it has received a
chilly reception in the world of ice dancing.
However, that may change if four-time U.S. ice
dance champions Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto
have a say.
The pair incorporated music from Justin
Timberlake during their routine Friday night
(April 6) at the Marshalls Showcase, the final
event of the figure skating season.
The positive crowd reaction reinforced Belbin
and Agosto’s belief that ice-skating audiences
are ready to hear new music from skaters.
''We're trying to push Hip-Hop and it's never
been accepted in the current international
community,'' Belbin told the San Diego Union
Tribune. ''Hopefully someday we'll be able
to spice up the competitions.
'We meet after the world championships every
year and talk about the regulations for next
season. We need more North American teams trying
it before we can get it accepted,'' she added.
