Friends are Great for Your Health |
|
My life has
improved significantly since I
started partner dancing (I was 15
when I first started). I know
many people in my community and even
more people around the country.
Probably the biggest kick is when I
go to other places and instantly
meet people because we share the
same love and passion...dance.
And if you're just starting out, it
can be intimidating at first but the
rewards are often felt on the first
or second time trying it, and last
for a lifetime. So why is
it that we have so FEW friends
nowadays? According to Health
magazine, research shows that when
it comes to adults, our circle of
friends has decreased by a THIRD
over the past 19 years. And it’s not
just that we’re lacking dinner
dates. We also have fewer people to
turn to when we’re sad, stressed or
otherwise in crisis. And this means
we miss the health benefits of
having a strong, social network –
which can do everything from boost
your immune system to protect you
from heart disease, cancer,
depression and anxiety.
Marla Paul is the author of
The Friendship Crisis: Finding,
Making and Keeping Friends When
You’re Not a Kid Anymore. And
she says people tend to think of
friendship as something you fit in
when all the important stuff is
done. But friends are NOT a luxury –
they’re an essential part of a
healthy lifestyle. So, here’s how to
make and keep good friends.
- Talk to strangers.
You may have a lot in common
with the person you see on the
train every day – you just don’t
know it yet. So get to talking.
You may find out that you both
love George Strait and Asian
cooking – then BOOM! Instant
friendship.

Handling Tough Situations |
|
Working with a
dance partner (social or
professional) can be a lot like
dealing with a relationship.
How you say things can greatly
affect how your partner responds (or
doesn't). Learning some of
these simple tips can easily make
your dance partnerships and your
life-partnerships a better
experience. So you want one
thing and your spouse wants another.
Or maybe you’re at a crossroads with
your boss, your friend, your
neighbor or your kid. How can you
come to a compromise in which you
BOTH come out ahead? Sonya Hamlin is
the author of the book How to
Talk So People Listen. And she
says the key to handling a difficult
situation is thinking through not
only YOUR goals and needs – but also
the other person’s. It should never
be an “I win, you lose” situation.
Here are some of her suggestions,
courtesy of the Bottom Line
Personal.
- Begin with a
question that’ll
encourage the other person to
arrive at the solution you’re
thinking of, rather than
offering that solution yourself.
For example, you might tell your
husband, “I’m having a problem
getting home from work, fixing
dinner and picking up Kimmie
from soccer practice on time.
What’s needed to fix this? Can
you help?” If you ask this
sincerely, it can help keep the
situation from becoming
accusatory or confrontational.
And your husband will probably
offer the solution you were
hoping for – which is either
“I’ll make dinner” or “I’ll pick
up Kimmie.”
