In my honest opinion, the Hustle
was an accurate representation of NY
style / Competitive Hustle. I was
happy to see WCS but I didn't think
it was as accurate a portrayal of
the competitive version or the
social version of the dance (lack of
clear anchor steps and proportion of
tricks to swing-content).
That being said, one must
remember that Hustle is definitely
(by design) the more dynamic of the
two dances. It is extremely
difficult to make WCS a flashy dance
for television...it is generally
much more subtle. So....I have to
tip my hat to both sets of
choreographers and dancers for
rocking the house with both dances.

Every month,
swing events around the country
bring aficionados and neophytes
together for workshops and social
dancing, as well as for heated
competitions, with dancers judged
for technical prowess, teamwork and
timing. People of all ages
participate. “We have three to four
generations at every event,” said
Annie Hirsch, a director of the
World Swing Dance Council, which
posts events at
www.swingdancecouncil.com. (A
list of events structured around a
competitive point system is
available through the National
Association of Swing Dance Events at
www.nasde.com.)
One of the most
popular competitions is the Jack &
Jill, in which names are drawn from
a hat so that dancers aren’t matched
with their usual partners.
“Sometimes the chemistry really
works,” said Barry Durand, the event
organizer of Swing Fling in
Washington and a former winner
of the U.S. Open Swing Dance
Championships.
